bolehwood awards
i've taken to adding titles to my blogs. it's one of those things good bloggers do. and also, i think you're supposed to have a conflict and a conclusion somewhere in the post.
watched a satirical play yesterday called the second first annual bolehwood awards. i thought it was great. it's times like these that make me think 'hey, malaysia isn't so bad after all'. i mean, we can be modern, sophisticated and critical.
don't ask me about the weird name for the comedy. it covered a whole range of issues like violence against women, inefficient government offices (hey, i wasn't the only one suffering huh? cool), islamic laws, government cronies, etc etc. it did this in an awards show format so that had very funny titles for movies like waterworks world: the jba(the water department) story. then they added that this movie took so much water to make it had to fill the whole of selangor with water but because of this, some parts of PJ didn't have water. haha...you'd get it if you were malaysian.
and then they had a skit about differences between races. how the chinese think the malays are lazy, the malays think the chinese are grabbing everything from under their noses, and how the indians are insignificant.
i guess i understand how theatre companies work. they make something with mass appeal, something that isn't intellectually challenging like bolehwood and their ticket prices are pretty high. this gives them the start-up money to do experimental stuff, the more artsy plays like 7ten, 7 ten minute plays which was bizarre. c'est genial. tickets for that were much less expensive but it didn't have mass appeal.
so, go Malaysian theatre!
