circumlocution
birthday wishes to ms phuah wey ling.
this past weekend was spent in nyc with tly and engaging in various activities - pub crawling, mermaid watching, priding, and sleeping on dirty floors (you really should vacuum). it was, in the american vernacular, awesome. yet disheartening because i'm falling further and further behind in keeping up with the joneses, and this latest setback - failing to obtain an internship is bitter. That said, I am consoled by London and all its prospects, but I want immediacy, I want now.
painting and maintenance (or as ly calls it "wash toilet") is a blow to the ego and a kick in the ass. it's a reminder that if you can't, you will sink to the bottom of the totem pole.
also, GRE preparation is rather similar to SATs, major word memorization and grouping; i plan to take it in august.

wow
me and my friend katie were deciding what we should do since it
was a sunday and we wanted to have as much fun as possible before
going back to the grind tomorrow so we decided to go downtown and sit
at a coffee shop and read for a little while and then watch 'batman
begins.'
after the movie, we were contemplating what we should have for dinner
- sandwiches at the wawa convenience store or sushi. we chose sushi
but we walk for blocks and blocks and all the sushi places we tried
were closed. at our last closed sushi place, we decided that we needed
to pee so we go into a little cuban cafe and decide to have mojitos -
a mint, lime, and rum combination - while making use of their
restrooms. since we still hadn't had dinner, i suggest we drive to
chinatown, to 'penang' the malaysian restaurant.
at penang, we are seated close to the rear of the eatery and from the
corner of my eye, i catch a glimpse of a bookish, chinese looking man
in rather formal attire - a black blazer and white oxford - sitting
with a rather formally attired posse. i think, could this be Dr. Koh,
the Chief Minister of Penang? after settling our orders, i asked the
waitress if she was malaysian and when she answered in the
affirmative, she confirmed my suspicion.
by this time, i was shifting in my seat, wondering how i should go
about the business of introducing myself, being friendly but not too
pushy, and inquiring about his visit to philadelphia. i decide to wait
until the party was taking their leave and i hastily make it to YBhg
Datuk Dr. Koh Tsu Koon and extend my hand and provided him with more
information than he cared for.
yeah it was surreal to actually meet a vip thousands of kilometers
away from home, slightly tipsy from cuban rum no less.

i suppose playing tennis for three consecutive hours from 11 to 2 pm will give you the burns that i sport now. my dermatologist friend was not pleased when i told him i didn't apply sunscreen.

x
i met x last night at a bar and we hit it off immediately. x spent undergraduate years at the american university in paris and is working towards a masters in hiv/aids policy and is described as very liberal. we start talking about hiv/aids in africa and the public's awareness of the situation. i recall, rather cleverly, that nelson mandela's son recently passed from the disease. x is appalled that i want to be an investment banker and i retort "an investment banker with a social conscience!" x is also sceptical about religion to which i say "jesus was a socialist."
x takes my cell number down and promises to call but it's been close to 24 hours now and there has been no call.
*burp*
i really should stop this gorging habit of eating too much and then feeling round, bloated, and redundant. for dinner today, i met my KL neighbors, andrew and dennis, in university city and headed straight for the indian buffet restaurant. it's remarkable that of all the cities, the three of us would all be in the same city.
after a particularly sumptuous and gratifying dinner, i played tour guide again for the umpteenth time.
wl: remember the ben franklin statue that i humped for the photograph? we were there again.
and then i contemplated getting bubble tea because i miss it so but i was full, but i wanted it so badly, but it was expensive, but it was delicious. i declined to go in on the account that their flavors were extremely warped - peach lattes?. What happened to the red/green milk tea, plain and simple, and with pearls or not. *Slap* put on the plastic top and it's ready to go, none of these nonsensical faux fusion latte teaology. what i think i miss most about bubble tea is that place by ecp which instead of adding regular tapioca balls, they would substitute it with flavoured chewy jelly. it added much flavor and color to the concept, i think.
even that place, momo with the hideously attractive orange awning above the shop in marine parade, i yearn for. their pearls were especially chewy but still supple and sweet. and their milk teas undiluted.

evolution
i was wondering today why the evolution/creation debate has never cropped up in the malaysian education system despite being islam influenced. i know that right from form 1 (or sec 1), i learnt about pre-history, the paleolitik and mesolitik eras, and how man has evolved since. but why haven't we been exposed to the intelligent-design concept or the something-out-of-nothing theory because the qu'ran is definitely on the side of creation, right?
