i believe i know enough of the williams' sisters to graduate with a degree in williamsology.
so for this post, i have decided to recapitulate the serena williams - justine henin-hardenne match, which i thought was lacklustre, a comedy of (unforced) errors, if you may.
first of all, the match was highly anticipated. serena was on a hot streak coming into the french, having won the past 4 majors. henin-hardenne however had handed serena her first defeat of the season, and on clay. serena looked like she had had a point to make as she blasted amelie mauresmo away in the quarters, amelie being the only other person who has defeated serena this year.
for williams non-knowers, the wiliams play very erratic tennis, and more often than not, when they lose, they beat themselves by making way to many unforced errors.
this match however was predicted as a serena williams whitewash. serena played awesome tennis in the previous round. as luck would have it however, this wasn't one of serena's better days and she went on to make more than 10 unforced errors in the first 2 games and losing the first set. the commentators seemed surprised that serena was losing but i guess they have not seen some of the spectacular losses serena has made, for example the rompings by her sister earlier in their career.
i was very irritated by the commentator, virginie something or other. she won the french open in 1978 but her comments were rather jarring. she commented that justine was playing very well, taking the pace off williams' balls, but this was not the case. it was more the case that serena wasn't moving well and going for too much. women's tennis has evolved very much since the 1970s and for the better part of the 1980s. in that era, women's tennis was a sideshow, they didn't play spectacularly, probably club tennis with short swings and few winners. there weren't any outstanding female players in that era who survived the late 80s when women's tennis became more competitive save for Chris Evert, Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova.
Back to the match, and in summary, Williams recouped in the second set, made less errors, and in the 3rd set, she lost 7-5. both women played very tight tennis, they were both obviously jittery. winners were far and few between. a thoroughly disappinting match, good thing i didn't watch it and went clubbing instead. ah-ha!
